IP scanner or port scanner is an IP and network exploration tool used by administration to scan and find external WANs and internal LANs. The port scanner purpose is to detect open ports and IP-addresses that are found open on host services, servers and internet tools, then the port scanner will inform your information of which devices and server, running on a remote local system. Port scanner can help you in detecting Trojan and other unwanted applications running on your network or computers. Many viruses have built-in port scan that help them to gain access to your computers and your computer assets. Therefore, this kind of software is there to check network and host services running on them. Network IP Scanner is totally different, however this type of scanner are widely used on lot of places.

Port scanner focuses on a port that are open, these tools can scan thousand of IP addresses as well as their ports automatically. IP scanning software ping each and every IP addresses to check it’s alive or dead, whether checking each of them manually, then it’s check its host-name, and then scan ports and determine the Mac addresses.

There are two usages of port scanning, One is defined as an attack on server port addresses by sending client request, with the intention of finding active and alive parts and exploiting their services. The other usage are not attacked and simply determine services related to remote computers.

Port Scanning Assumptions

There is an assumption that all ports scanning rely on that targeted host is compliant with RFC 793 – Transmission Control Protocol. Almost sometime, there is a possibility that a host might send back weird packets or start generating false positives when TCP/IP is not compliant with RFC.
There are three types of Ip and port scanning :
1) TCP scanning
2) SYN scanning
3) UDP scanning

TCP Scanning

The simplest and most common port scanner use network functions of the operating system and when SYN scanning is not feasible for you then you can use TCP scanning. If the scanner found any port open, it’s immediately close it to prevent any vulnerable attack or DOS attack and if it’s fail an error code is returned.

SYN Scanning

The SYN is a second form of TCP scanning, rather than using operating system network functions for scanning. The scanner creates raw IP packets and monitor and observe responses. This scan never open a full TCP connection, that’s why also refer as half open connection.

UDP Scanning

This is third and most complex type of scan because there are technical challenges. There is no connection in UDP therefore it is not equivalent and easy to TCP SYN Packet. If a UDP packet generates and send to the port which is closed, an unreachable message is returned with an ICMP port. Generally UDP scanner utilizes this scanning method, and use non-response to infer that port is not open.

Selecting IP or Port Scanner For You

There are five network IP-scanner and network monitor tools in the market. Some of them are free, I prefer you to choose tools based on two criteria, there are easy to use and they’re free or at-least have a trial period.

  1. Wireshark
  2. Angry IP Scanner
  3. Zenmap
  4. Colasoft Capsa Free
  5. EtherApe
